Collecting a resin is a slower business than pulling a root, and it happens in two stages.
Cut, then wait
An incision is made in the bark. The tree exudes resin into the wound, and over time that exudate hardens into tears. Those tears are what is collected, sometimes weeks later.
Why the method shapes the material
The material that arrives is already partly dried by the air, and it contains the oil, gum and resin fractions together, which is what oleo-gum-resin describes. It is not a powder until it is made one.
Classical handling
A resin behaves differently from a paste or a powder in a preparation, which is why the tradition built specific equipment for it, such as the Dola Yantra.
